Winter is a magical time, and our elderly deserve to enjoy the glittering snow and Christmas films without worrying about how much their heating bill will be! So here are our top tips for keeping warm this winter without touching the thermostat...
Movement
Whether it's a relaxing walk around a local park or some light sitting-down exercises in the front room, a little bit of movement does a lot to help warm the body! Check out our Community Page to see what local goups and events might be happening in your area.
Blankets
Everyone loves a good fluffy blanket, and with stores like B&M everyone can have one! Make sure your loved one always has a soft, warm blanket tucked neatly around them. If they have two, tuck one over their lap and wrap the other around their shoulders for extra cosiness!
Socks
Good socks are not only a great (albeit underappreciated) Christmas present, they play an important role in keeping our feet protected from cold kitchen and bathroom floors! Make sure your elderly ones have a good supply of well made, thick socks to keep their toesies toasty!
Cardigans and Dressing Gowns
As we get older, things like putting on a jumper and doing up a long line of buttons on our shirts become more difficult, and take a little longer than they used to... Make sure your loved ones have a variety of dressing gowns and cardigans that are easy to put on and do up.
Indoor Scarves
We all have a big woolly scarf for our walk to the shop in winter, but even the slightest indoor breeze can cause stiffness and soreness in the neck and shoulders, especially for our elderly who are extra sensitive to changes in temperature. Having a few smaller, 'indoor scarves' or shawls can help protect our elderly from any cold air that may find its way in...
Thick Curtains
Curtains don't just hide the streetlights at night, they also reduce the amount of air exchange between the cold glass window and the rest of the room! Thick, high quality curtains can help to reduce heat loss by 40%!
Wheat Bags and Warmies!
Wheat Bags are a fantastic alternative to the traditional hot water bottle and a great holistic remedy to relieve aches, pains and discomfort. Simply microwave for two minutes to enjoy up to an hour of warmth, then re-heat again! Wheat bags can be reheated and re-used many times over, and can last up to ten years! A Warmie is a Wheat Bag inside a soft toy, providing both warmth and cuteness. We highly recommend.
Hot Drinks
A hot drink is a great way to warm the body! Make sure your loved ones are getting their daily fill of hot teas, chocolate and mulled wine this winter.
Pre-Warm the Bed
Ten minutes before they go to bed, put a wheat bag under the duvet so that it's already nice and cosy when they get in. You can also do this with their favourite chair in the mornings!
And that concludes our top tips for keeping your elderly warm this winter! If you have another good tip that isn't listed here please comment and let us know, we'd love to hear it!
